Dr. Alexandra Nicholson
Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year! The administrative team and I feel privileged to serve the communities of Northbrook and Glenview by leading the education of the children of District 31. Throughout the year, our efforts will focus on fulfilling the District's mission: “Preparing Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s World. We educate our children to achieve their highest potential in all growth areas -- intellectual, emotional, social, and physical.” District 31 is committed to providing a high quality educational program to all students. We take our role in preparing your children for being successful within an ever changing world very seriously.
Each school year, key initiatives for continued improvement are identified that directly correspond to the District 31 Strategic Plan. During the 2013-2014 school year, these fall within the following categories: Communication, Community, Educational Programming, Finances, Operations, and Personnel.
District 31 has embarked on several journeys that we believe will make our schools models for success. To name a few, we have begun one-to-one student technology at the middle school with plans to expand to grades 3-5 in 2014-2015 and grades K-2 in 2015-2016. Our teachers are actively engaged in extensive professional development in preparation for converting the math curriculum/instructional program to the common core. A District team is engaged in re-designing the ELL/bilingual program to better meet the educational needs of our students whose families have come to us from other countries. Our middle school staff is preparing for the 2014-2015 implementation of improved middle school programming. Research is being conducted on the possible expansion of foreign language to the elementary grades as well as the expansion of half-day to full-day kindergarten.
I encourage you to browse our web site to learn more about our District. You can review the 2013-2014 Strategic Plan in its entirety, learn when Board of Education meetings are scheduled as well as review formal meeting minutes, read the Student/Parent Handbook, check the District and school calendars for important dates, learn about PTC and Education Foundation activities, etc. We anticipate you will find the information informative and valuable.
The faculty and I look forward to working with all of you throughout the 2013-2014 school year. Please do not hesitate to contact any of us with questions, comments, and/or suggestions.
